Medical Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

Most orthopedic and sports injuries do not require surgery. Physiatry referral is commonly made for the following conditions:

Joint pain including all peripheral joints, most commonly hips, knees and shoulders
Physiatrists evaluate and treat a wide variety of such injuries and disorders with aggressive, cutting edge, non-surgical techniques such as:
Physiatry is a unique medical specialty, which embraces holistic evaluation of the patients. This approach integrates information on the patient's prior physical state of health as well as their level of motivation, and is designed to help each patient reach maximal potential when recovering from orthopedic and musculoskeletal injuries.

Patients with joint, extremity or spinal pain are frequently referred to Medical Rehabilitation Associates to determine whether a patient’s problem can be managed conservatively, or if surgical consultation is recommended. Physiatrists may perform electrodiagnostic testing (EMG/NCV), diagnostic nerve blocks, and interpretation of radiological and neuroimaging studies to provide additional objective information in making treatment recommendations.

In the event that surgery is required, MRA physiatrists typically work closely with orthopedic surgeons and other specialists. Patients are often referred to a rehabilitation specialist to work with them postoperatively to design a specific program of rehabilitation targeting their unique abilities and weaknesses after injury.
